Program Description

The Certificate of Achievement in Construction Management: includes courses that focus on the technical and management skills required in the field of construction and project management, as well as courses that provide knowledge in the technical aspects of construction and general business. This certificate is designed to meet the needs of students who are returning to college after completing a degree in another field who seek to enter into the profession of construction management. It also provides students who are currently employed in the construction management industry in entry-level positions the opportunity for advancement by enhancing their knowledge.


What can I do with this major?

Construction careers in building and planning, such asa Project Manager, Project Engineer, Project coordinator, onsite & offsite project management positions, work for general contractors, engineers or architects. Work on a Construction Project involving procurement, project administration, estimating & scheduling, field support and sub-trade management. Graduates may be employed by contractors, construction management firms, developers, consultants, business and government agencies.

    Fundamentals of Construction Management

    3 units
    Introduction to the basic concepts of construction project management including: the building design and construction process; project participants, their roles and responsibilities. Areas of focus includes the application of the principles of contracts in relation to construction projects, estimating, scheduling and project control.

    Introduction to Construction Management

    1 unit
    Overview of the Construction Management profession and the requirements for programs of study. This course focuses on the scope and nature of work in Construction Management, including professional roles, skills and responsibilities, career opportunities, and higher education pathways. CMGT 1 is not required, but strongly recommended

    Construction Drawings & Graphics

    3 units
    Introduction to basic graphic and communication skills and knowledge required to effectively read and use drawings in the construction industry. Analysis of drawings in the civil, architectural, structural, mechanical, and electrical fields and their relationship to construction planning and estimating.

    Construction Scheduling

    3 units
    Study of the basic concepts of construction scheduling: scheduling techniques with a focus on Critical Path Method; CPM schedule planning, scheduling, updating and analysis. Manual procedures in scheduling are followed by computer applications.

    Construction Estimating & Budget Development

    3 units
    A study of the fundamental approaches to estimating the cost of building construction projects. Topics discussed include: types of construction estimates; the material takeoff process; the use of computers in estimating; total project estimating including direct costs, indirect costs, contingency and profit. The course will also offer concepts in cost management in construction.

    Construction Project Administration

    3 units
    Principles and practical applications of construction project administration with an emphasis on construction- phase services. Topics include: an overview of project administration throughout the phases of a construction project; the contractual and regulatory environment of construction projects; integration of project concepts and programming; the development of a project procedure manual; computer-based project administration.
