Program Description

Chabot College offers several NONCREDIT Certificates of Achievement in Automotive Technology. The certificate is built around a core set of courses in specific automotive areas. The classes are designed to upgrade your skills and place you in the industry quickly. As you progress through your automotive program, you will be able to obtain certificates in different automotive areas and start entering your new career in the automotive industry. You will also be prepared to take your industry certification exams during your courses here at Chabot College from the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) and California State Licensing.


What can I do with this major?

As a graduate you will be highly sought after for entry level technicians for positions in both the Dealership and Aftermarket areas. You will know how to diagnose, service, and repair an automobile with pride and confidence.

ATEC 201
Automotive Engines

This course covers the fundamentals of automotive engine operation and design, including various engine configurations and internal components. Students will learn mechanical diagnostic testing procedures, engine disassembly and inspection, thread repair, broken bolt removal, and precision measurement techniques. Additional topics include engine assembly, timing chain and belt installation, valve adjustments, and cooling system operation. The course also introduces basic engine machining concepts and emphasizes the proper use of shop tools, equipment, and safety practices. This course provides a comprehensive study of modern automotive suspension and steering systems, with emphasis on diagnostic procedures, inspection techniques, and corrective repairs. Topics include steering geometry, suspension design, wheel alignment principles, supplemental restraint systems (SRS), tire pressure monitoring systems (TPMS), and the use of specialized equipment. Students will develop skills in analyzing system performance, adjusting, and applying industry-standard repair practices in a shop environment.
