Apprenticeship Programs at Chabot College are an excellent way to earn a certificate and/or an associate degree while also gaining real-world, paid work experience in the occupation. The requirements and expectations vary depending on the apprenticeship program. Classes also vary by program, with some offered in person, online or off-campus.

Program Description

The apprentice works directly under the supervision of a qualified Journeyman Roofer in installing or maintaining a variety of approved roofing systems and repair work. The work is performed in existing or new residential, commercial, and industrial buildings and includes waterproofing substrates and surfaces.

The trade requires considerable physical effort on the part of the apprentice to do lifting, climbing, crouching, and working on elevated surfaces and also requires acceptance into the Independent Roofing Contractors of California Apprenticeship Program, approved by the California State Division of Apprenticeship Standards Apprentices.

Apprentices must work a total of 4000 hours in three and one half (3 1/2) years to reach journey level status. Apprentices are required to attend related instruction classes a minimum of 144 hours per year (three 10-week Module classes per year) at one of the 10 IRCC Approved training sites.

What can I do with this major?

All Apprentices start off with an hourly wage (based on the Prevailing Wage in the county the work is performed in) and in some cases fringe benefit package and the wages increase based on advancement within the program.

Upon completion of the apprenticeship program, the graduate may be employed at the journey level by contractors, and then, by getting continuing education certification, advance through the industry or may pursue a Roofer’s Contractor license and start a company.

    Semester 1

    Roof/Waterproof Material/Equipment

    3 units
    Preparation and application of various roofing and waterproofing materials including bitumen and asphalt products, built-up roofing materials and adhesives, rigid roofing materials, elastomeric and plastic membranes, flashing materials, fasteners and operation and maintenance of small engines. Student must be registered in the IRCC Apprentice Program.

    Introduction to Roofing/Waterproof Industry

    3 units
    Introduction to the apprenticeship program for the roofing and waterproofing industry including safety, use of tools and equipment, types of roofs and structural design. Student must be registered in the IRCC Apprentice Program.

    Occupational Work Experience - Roofing Apprenticeship

    1-2 units
    College supervised on-the-job training. Apprenticeship work experience in an occupation related to student’s apprenticeship program. Cooperative effort of the work supervisor, student, Joint Apprenticeship Training Council (JATC) or Program Sponsor, and instructor to achieve work-based learning objectives. Students must be enrolled in an apprenticeship program. Within the academic term, students must complete 54 hours of paid or non-paid work for 1.00 unit. Students can earn a maximum of 14 units of Work Experience.

    Build-Up Roofing Assemblies

    3 units
    Preparation and application of built-up roofing assemblies and related components. Including roof preparation, handling, and loading of Built-up roofing materials. Operation, maintenance, and safety of kettle operation. Overview of other built-up roofing consideration - Insulation, Sumps and drains and Flashings. Student must be registered in the IRCC Apprentice Program.

    Cold-Applied Roofing Systems

    3 units
    Preparation and application of cold-applied assemblies and related components including waterproofing, dampproofing, asphaltic, bituminous sheet and membrane, elastomeric sheet and fluid applied systems. Student must be registered in the IRCC Apprentice Program.

    The preparation and application of rigid roof materials, including one and two piece Mission tiles, Roman tiles, Concrete interlocking tiles, slate and rigid materials. Hoisting and handling of rigid materials. Student must be registered in the IRCC Apprentice Program.

    Roofing Shingles

    3 units
    Application and maintenance of various roofing shingle systems including safety, preliminary work, new construction, reroofing, roll roofing and wood shingles and shakes. Student must be registered in the IRCC Apprentice Program.

    1-2 units
    College supervised on-the-job training. Apprenticeship work experience in an occupation related to student’s apprenticeship program.     3 units
    The maintenance, repair and re-roofing, waterproofing and dampproofing of built-up, shingle, cold applied, single-ply and rigid roofs. Includes safety, material handling and leak detection. Student must be registered in the IRCC Apprentice Program.

    Single-Ply Roofing and Waterproofing Systems

    3 units
    The application and maintenance of single-ply roofing and waterproofing systems. Includes materials and safety of EDPM, Modified Bitumen and Thermoplastic systems. Student must be registered in the IRCC Apprentice Program.

    College supervised on-the-job training. Apprenticeship work experience in an occupation related to student’s apprenticeship program.     Standard First Aid

    3 units
    Development of first aid knowledge and skills necessary to care for most personal injuries and to meet most personal injuries, including but not limited to heat related illness, burns, bleeding, shock, stroke, seizures, and allergies. Accident prevention. Development of CPR knowledge and skills necessary to care for victims of sudden cardiac arrest, and use of AED. Successful completion of the knowledge and skills tests qualifies for an American Red Cross Adult CPR, AED and Standard First Aid Certification, valid for 2 years. Student must be registered in the IRCC Apprentice Program.

    Plans and Specifications

    3 units
    The development and application of plans, specifications, regulations, cost estimating and mathematics for the roofing and waterproofing industry. Use of and reading plans, specification and codes related to the roofing trade. Mathematics, and square determinations. Student must be registered in the IRCC Apprentice Program.
