Program Description
This certificate will combine Japanese language proficiency, business culture, and entrepreneurship to prepare students to seize opportunities in the global market. You will develop an extensive cultural and business knowledge of Japan, which is one of the largest economies in the world by GDP with hundreds of billions of dollars spent by the Japanese on consumer goods/services.

What can I do with this major?

Graduates with this degree will be prepared to:

  1. Seek employment in the fields of Global Trade & Logistics, International Business, and Trade Occupations.
  2. Work as an entrepreneur, global trade and logistics worker, business consultant, business operations specialist, supply chain specialist, logistics analyst, human resource specialist, cargo and freight agent, shipping, receiving, purchasing, and traffic clerk, sales clerk.
  3. Seek work in Japanese companies with offices in the USA, Canada, and Asia and communicate well with potential customers, business partners, employers or vendors.
  4. Use Chabot Japanese language course units for:
    1. Certificate of Achievement in Japanese
    2. UC and CSU transfer requirements

Students who have studied 2 or more years of Japanese in High School may start at JAPN 1B or JAPN 2A level. To request a higher placement, please contact Professor Otomi at yotomi@chabotcollege.edu.
If a student places out of any core course(s) and is not awarded units for that course, the student will need to take additional units to compensate for the course/units required to reach 18 total units in the major (Title 5 regulations). Course substitutions are made at the discretion of the local college and may or may not be delineated in the local degree.

Beginning Japanese

5 units
Introduction to the Japanese cultures of the world featuring the study and practice of the four language skills (listening, speaking, reading, and writing) of Japanese. Following an immersion instruction format, the class is entirely taught in the target world language of the selected course.

Elementary Japanese

5 units
Further study of Japanese-speaking cultures of the world featuring the acquisition of the four language skills (listening, speaking, reading, and writing) of Japanese begun in Japanese 1A. Following an immersion instruction format, the class is entirely taught in the target world language of the selected course.

International Business

3 units
Exploration of major factors involved in developing international trade. An overview of globalization, its impact on both Western and non-Western societies, theories of global trade, monetary environment, foreign market analysis, sociocultural forces, global ethics, global political and economic institutions, and international operations. Emphasis on current events in the global business environment.

Review of grammar; practice in conversation and composition; research on topics related to Japan. Following an immersion instruction format, the class is entirely taught in the target world language of the selected course. JAPN 2A and 2B sequence are offered every other year.

ENTR 1
Introduction to Entrepreneurship

3 units
Introduction to the key concepts and skill requirements for new business creation. Evaluation of personal entrepreneurship skills. Emphasis on identifying business opportunities, and process of planning for new venture start-up.

Introduction to Business

3 units
Survey of the private enterprise system and basic business concepts, business economics, types of business ownership, ethics, globalization, and organizational functions (management, marketing, accounting, human resources, and finance). Provides a multidisciplinary examination of how culture, society, economic systems, legal, international, political, financial institutions, and human behavior interact to influence an organization's policies and practices within the U.S. and a global environments.

Marketing for Entrepreneurs

Marketing strategy and techniques for start-up and small businesses. Focus on low-cost, flexible, innovative marketing tools including social media and Internet marketing.
