This program map from the 2024-2025 catalog year represents one possible pathway to complete this program. Your pathway may vary depending on your transfer plans and also previous college credit, including AP Test scores, concurrent enrollment courses and high school articulated courses.

I'm ready to get started. What do I do next?

  1. Review this program map to get an overview of the required courses
  2. Meet with a counselor to develop your customized student education plan www.chabotcollege.edu/counseling
  3. Use DegreeWorks, an online student education planning tool, to track your progress toward graduation www.chabotcollege.edu/admissions/degreeworks

This degree gives students interested in providing inclusive services to all children a foundation of understanding and skills for working with children with special needs. You will get the opportunity to participate in fieldwork experiences where you can apply theory and early intervention methods in inclusive programs as well as special day classes that serve young children with disabilities.

Degree completers will meet requirements to be an Assistant or Associate teacher in a wide-variety of public, private and faith-based child care settings, including infant and toddler sites. Students who earn this degree will fulfill Community Care Licensing requirements to be a preschool teacher of young children.

You will also meet the coursework requirements for the Associate Teacher California Child Development Permit, and the Teacher Child Development Permit. Students will also be qualified to work as aides and paraprofessionals in elementary school special day classes and in inclusive classrooms. Labor market information points to a large number of openings in special education.
