This course covers the basic sound/spelling patterns of English. Topics include open and closed syllables, short and long vowel sounds, consonant and consonant cluster sounds, spelling of homophones and other problem words in everyday English.

Measurable Objectives:
Upon completion of this course, the student should be able to:
- Apply knowledge of common English letter combinations, prefixes, suffixes and roots to identify spelling errors;
- Apply rules of English syllables and phonics to spell new words;
- Apply the correct spelling of homophones and words from the 250 most commonly used English words.

Assignments and Methods of Evaluating Student Progress:
1. Typical Assignments
- Sort words into a chart of short and long vowel sounds
- Write example sentences using the correct meaning of the homophones: there/their, our/hour, your/you're and break/brake
- Create flashcards for the next 15 words on our list of most common English words. Quiz your partner on the spelling.

3. Student Learning Outcomes
Upon the completion of this course, the student should be able to:
- Use the patterns of English syllables, phonics, spelling and morphology studied in class to make reasonable guesses about the spelling of new words;
- Spell words from the class list, including the 250 most common English words and homophones, with at least 80% accuracy.
