Introductory course in the history, philosophy, techniques and safety aspects of tae-kwon-do. This is an ancient Korean martial art where students will learn "the way of fist and foot," as well as increase cardiovascular and muscular fitness.

Measurable Objectives:
Upon completion of this course, the student should be able to:
  1. demonstrate the basics of tae kwon do as a method of self defense, and to aid the development of self confidence;
  2. demonstrate a general physical conditioning and the body control required in tae kwon do movements;
  3. demonstrate two katas upon completion of the unit.
Course Content:
 
  1. Introduction to the Philosophy to Tae kwon do
  2. Basic Movements Stances
  3. Body positioning for defense and/or attacks
  4. Blocking techniques
  5. Hip turning for defense and/or attack
  6. Muscular coordination of the arm development
  7. Muscular coordination of the leg development
  8. Complete balance control for the various positions of tae kwon do
  9. Punching techniques
  10. Striking techniques
  11. Kicking techniques
  12. Defense technique super body defense
  13. Mid body defense
  14. Lower body defense
  15. Exposure to the major purpose and aesthetic values of kata
Methods of Instruction:
  1. Demonstration/Exercise
  2. Performance
  3. Group Activities
  4. Presentation
  5. Instruction will be given in the group as a whole, as well as on an individual basis. The material for the course will be presented through combination of Instructor demonstrations and lecture. Verbal description and explanation of drills will be a main part of instruction. Films, exhibitions, and class discussions will be incorporated if time allows.
Assignments and Methods of Evaluating Student Progress:
  1. Demonstrate three different tae kwon do stances and indicate the purpose for each stance.
  2. Demonstrate kick and hand block techniques with a partner.
  3. Read the chapter on blocking techniques. Be prepared to demonstrate two of these techniques in class.
  4. Read the chapter on the history of tae kwon do and be prepared to discuss two major events.

  2. Proper execution of tae kwon do exercises and katas
  3. Regular class attendance with proper attire
  4. Final written exam on the basic philosophy and terms of tae kwon do
  5. Class Performance
Upon the completion of this course, the student should be able to:
  1. Demonstrate and explain the physiological reasons for performing a proper warm up.
  2. Work within a group, or team, to solve problems
  3. Demonstrate improved fitness, and overall wellness, by participating in a consistent training program

  • Students are required to wear either the basic karate/judo attire or that recommended for activity classes at Chabot College.
