Measurable Objectives:
Upon completion of this course, the student should be able to:
describe the relationship between heart rate and energy system involved;
evaluate their aerobic fitness level based on heart rate;
operate a heart rate monitor;
describe heart rate training zones in relation to their overall fitness plan;
design a number of weekly exercise plans based on their heart rate and fitness level;
use their heart rate as a guide to achieve optimum all-around fitness;
explain the importance of normal blood pressure readings as they relate to long term health and the prevention of heart disease and adult type II diabetes;
use their heart rate to exercise correctly.

Identify problem foods as they relate to diabetes and hypertension
Waist to hips ratio and its relationship to diabetes and hypertension

Getting the essential tests done with your physician
Shopping and eating in a new way to improve your health
The risks of being sedentary
Ten things to teach your pre-diabetic child
Using a heart rate monitor
Understanding heart rate training
Aerobic fitness and heart rate
Maximum heart rate and the training zones
How to develop an exercise plan
Diet, heart rate and exercise for weight control

Assignments and Methods of Evaluating Student Progress:
Record your blood pressure readings every other week. Determine if your readings fall in the normal range or the pre-hypertensive range.
Record your waist to hip measurements. Do these results combined with your blood pressure recordings show signs of pre-diabetes? If so, what changes can be made to prevent adult diabetes?
Complete a one mile fitness assessments bi-monthly at 70% heart rate. Record the results of the assessment and create a two week training program based on the results of that assessment.
Keep a daily journal recording exercise and eating habits. Review the journal each week throughout the semester to identify areas for improvement.
