PEAC SBB2 - Intermediate Sport-Specific Training - Baseball

Designed to increase physical conditioning, skill level, and knowledge in the sport of baseball. Individual baseball player to increase their specific physical conditioning, skill/technique level. Students must have experience and a high level of skill to enroll in this course.
Prerequisite: PEAC SSB1.

Measurable Objectives:
Upon completion of this course, the student should be able to:
  1. demonstrate the correct stance for hitting and the essential skill components to hit in competitive baseball;
  2. evaluate their base running ability and improve upon their physical conditioning relevant to the demands of baseball;
  3. track their blood pressure;
  4. demonstrate exercises that will prevent baseball throwing injuries and adult type II diabetes;
  5. demonstrate how to correctly approach a ground ball in the field and set their feet for an accurate throw.
Course Content:
 
  1. Principles of resistance exercise as it relates to diabetes      
  2. Identifying metabolic syndrome 
  3. Getting the essential tests done with your physician 
  4. The risks of being sedentary 
  5. Physical conditioning for baseball to improve the following: aerobic capacity, strength, speed, agility, power, flexibility, etc.
  6. Hitting: what is the proper stance?
  7. How to approach a ball in the outfield
  8. How to approach a ball in the infield
  9. Learning to set your feet before you throw
  10. Baseball drills and skill/technique practice to improve individual proficiency.
  11. Strategy/tactics to improve baseball awareness, decision-making, and execution.

Assignments and Methods of Evaluating Student Progress:
  1. Read the chapter on strength and injury prevention. Be prepared to discuss how increasing strength can prevent injuries. Write a paper summarizing the common injuries in baseball.
  2. Write up an evaluation of skill that you would like to improve upon. Identify how to improve upon that particular skill.
  3. Write an evaluation of your improvements in physical conditioning based upon pre- and post- assessments.

  2. Demonstrate and explain the physiological reasons for performing a proper warm up.
