Measurable Objectives:
Upon completion of this course, the student should be able to:
demonstrate the basic drills & techniques to play the game of basketball. Those skills include dribbling, passing and shooting;
demonstrate an increased overall physical fitness by playing basketball;
track their blood pressure;
identify problem foods as they relate to diabetes and hypertension;
evaluate individual and team performance in all aspects of the sport, including technique and offensive/defensive strategies.
Course Content:
Present nature of game and opportunities for play outside of class
Care and use of equipment
Court conduct and conditioning
Basic skills for presentation; chest pass, bounce pass, one-hand underhand pass, lay up shot, and set shot
Rules discussions
Role of resistance exercise in overall health and wellness.
Principles of resistance exercise.
Dangers of hypertension and pre-diabetes.

Presentation of audio-visual materials
Distance Education
The materials for the course are presented through the use of the lecture demonstration technique. Instruction will be given in large groups, small groups, and on an individual basis. Student practice is emphasized.
Assignments and Methods of Evaluating Student Progress:
Read the chapter on passing drills and be prepared to explain terminology and demonstrate a chest pass, bounce pass, hook pass, and one-hand underhand pass.
Analyze and critique two students' lay up shooting technique. Provide feedback to help improve their performance.
Describe the following violations and indicate the consequence of each violation. (1) Ten second back court violation (2) Traveling (3) Three seconds in the lane (4) Inbound lane violation
Measure blood pressure twice weekly over six weeks. Keep a journal of each day's measure
Read the chapter on blood pressure and blood sugar. Be prepared to discuss how these two measurements relate to pre-diabetes and hypertension.
