PEAC SOC1 - Introduction to Soccer

Emphasizes the fundamental skills and strategies of soccer. This course focuses on rules, etiquette, safety, and soccer skills, such as dribbling, passing, shooting and defending. Offensive and defensive positions and basic team strategies are also addressed. No previous soccer experience is necessary.

Measurable Objectives:
Upon completion of this course, the student should be able to:
  1. demonstrate the basic fundamentals of the game such as passing, kicking, dribbling, and tackling;
  2. demonstrate appropriate safety and etiquette for non-competitive soccer;
  3. perform a soccer-specific warm-up that prepares the body for the physical demands of the sport;
  4. recognize offensive and defensive positioning on the field and utilize simple soccer tactics;
  5. demonstrate the ability to take their blood pressure on a regular and consistent basis;
  6. participate in full-field games in a variety of field positions.
Course Content:
 
  1. History and background of the sport.
  2. Description and rules of the game.
  3. Demonstration and practice of fundamentals of soccer.

    5. Tackling
    6. Heading
  4. Playing positions.
  5. Game strategy
  6. Soccer drills involving the above skills.
  7. How to take your blood pressure
  8. What the blood pressure numbers mean
  9. High glycemic foods and your long term health
 
Methods of Instruction:
  1. Demonstration/Exercise
  2. Simulations
  3. Presentation of audio-visual materials
  4. Textbook reading assignments
  5. Sport skills are presented by the instructor through oral and written explanations. Students practice skills individually and in groups, during which time there is a continuous process of evaluation by the instructor. Movies and other media are to be used when available.
Assignments and Methods of Evaluating Student Progress:
  1. Read the chapter on the offsides rule and describe how a player can be in an offsides position.
  2. Read the chapter diagramming a soccer field. Be prepared to define the field markings.
  3. Perform two dribbling moves for beating a defender.
  4. Read the chapter on blood pressure and blood sugar. Be prepared to discuss how these two measurements relate to pre-diabetes and hypertension.
  5. Measure blood pressure twice weekly over six weeks. Keep a journal of each day's measure
  6. Keep a 12-week exercise journal. In the journal record daily activity, time spent on the activity, how you felt and your exercise heart rate. Once every two weeks record your hips to waist measure.
  7. Write an essay on your observations of a professional or international soccer match on television. Discuss what you observed to be a strength for each team.
  1. Each student will be evaluated on the basis of his attendance, participation, improvement, skill, and knowledge of the sport.
