Measurable Objectives:
Upon completion of this course, the student should be able to:
demonstrate the ability to properly execute in depth jumps;
demonstrate a proper drive phase from a number of positions;
demonstrate a series of specific speed dynamic drills that are essential to good running mechanics;
identify and demonstrate the olympic lifts that contribute to the overall development of speed and power;
demonstrate static and dynamic warm-up and flexibility exercises and be able to identify when each method should be employed.
Course Content:
1. Plyometrics: Landing, double leg, single and in depth jumps
2. Olympic lifts for development of speed and power
3. Proper sprint mechanics from the drive phase to maintenance phase.
4. Finding the drive phase from standing position.
5. The accelleration phase from a three point stance.
6. The drive phase from a prone position.
7. Finding the drive phase from a sitting position.
8. Drills to development speed, agility and proper running mechanics.
9. Flexibility training both static and dynamic.
10. Developing a training plan incorporating plyometrics, the olympic lifts, proper sprint mechanics and flexibility exercises.
Methods of Instruction:
Demonstration/Exercise
Use of Recordings
Practice/Demonstration
Written assignments
Small Group Coaching
One-on-one coaching
Distance Education
Assignments and Methods of Evaluating Student Progress:
Read the chapter on plyometric loading. Write a short paper describing the differences between single leg, double leg and in depth training. Please note the different effect that each exercise has upon the nuero-muscular system.
Demonstrate to the class a proper drive phase from a three point start. Talk about the essential points: triple extension and 45 degree angle. How is this achieved?
Make a list of eight or more drills designed to specifically improve speed and agility. Make a check list of what to look for when doing each drill.

Class Participation
Oral Presentation
Final Examination
Papers
Upon the completion of this course, the student should be able to:
Demonstrate and explain the physiological reasons for performing a proper warm up.
Work within a group, or team, to solve problems
