Measurable Objectives:
Upon completion of this course, the student should be able to:
  1. demonstrate the ability to swim non-stop for 20 minutes using a variety of strokes;
  2. demonstrate the ability to tread water for five minutes;
  3. demonstrate the ability to perform a flip turn.
Course Content:
  1. Introduction of the principles of heart rate based training.
  2. Applying heart rate training to swimming.
  3. Demonstration of flip turns.
  4. Demonstrate of the various stroke progressions.
  5. Continuous aerobic swimming within the student's individual target heart rate.

  4. Class and group discussions
Assignments and Methods of Evaluating Student Progress:
  1. Analyze and compare the difference between training heart rate achieved on land aerobics versus swimming laps. Explain why heart rates are lower in the water.
  2. Demonstrate the ability to tread water for five minutes non-stop.
  3. Demonstrate the ability to swim 20 minutes in your target heart rate training zone.
  4. Show on paper how to calculate your target heart rate training numbers.
