PEAC TEN2 - Intermediate Tennis

This course is designed for those students who have completed Tennis 1. The course will involve more techniques on the strokes of tennis, introducing spin as a control technique, footwork patterns, conditioning, historical background, rules, scoring, as well as strategy and court positioning for singles and doubles play.
Prerequisite: PEAC TEN1.

Measurable Objectives:
Upon completion of this course, the student should be able to:
  1. competently perform intermediate skills of forehand, backhand, serve, and volley, using the correct grip and imparting spin on the ball;
  2. explain and employ, in match play, the formal rules of scoring and rotations, and the etiquette of tennis;
  3. competently perform and pass all 3 Continental Volley Tests.
Course Content:
 
 
1. Review and practice of the intermediate skills, such as:
        A. Forehand with topspin
        B. Backhand with topspin
        C. Serve with topspin and sidespin.
        D. Volley using the Continental grip.
        E. These skill will be explained, demonstrated and practiced on an
            intermediate level, emphasizing correct grips and spin.
2. Explanation, demonstration and practice of the following skills:
        A. Forehand and Backhand with topspin.
        B. Serve with topspin and sidespin.
        C. Volley with the Continental grip.
        D. Conditioning for tennis competition.
3. Explanation, demonstration and practice of team strategy and  
    tactics relative to :
        A. Singles Match Play.
        B. Doubles Match Play.

Assignments and Methods of Evaluating Student Progress:
  1. Read the chapter on serving and be prepared to demonstrate the Flat Serve, Slice Serve, and Topspin Serve.
  2. Read the chapter on the rules of tennis and describe what constitutes a let serve and a net shot.
  3. Compare and contrast the difference in match play between male and female players, in regards to the 4 Grandslam Tourneys.
  4. Demonstrate and describe the forehand technique, using the 3 different grips. The Eastern Forehand, Semi-Western, and the Full Western Grip.
