PEAC PIL3 - Advanced Pilates

This course will enable the student to participate in Pilates exercise routines for body and mind fitness. Pilates develops a strong core or center through body awareness, good posture and easy graceful movement while improving flexibility, agility and economy of motion. Advanced Pilates will build on the basic principles learned in PIL2. Students will learn about eating to support an active lifestyle as well as principles of total wellness.
Prerequisite: PEAC PIL2.

Measurable Objectives:
Upon completion of this course, the student should be able to:
  1. demonstrate Advanced Pilates mat work routines;
  2. demonstrate an improvement on strength endurance and flexibility;
  3. demonstrate knowledge of Pilates training and conditioning exercises into daily lifestyle;
  4. demonstrate percussive breathing while performing all exercises.
Course Content:
(Lecture)
1. Pilates in the life of the elderly
2. Pilates in the life of the athlete
3. Pilates in the life of children
4. Stress reduction techniques
 
(Lab)
1. Explain the fundamentals of advanced Pilates
2. Demonstrate proper form for Pilates movements
3. Perform Pilates routines on cue
4. Proper techniques for warming up and cooling down
5. Identify and explain how to perform advanced Pilates movements
6. Proper use of bands and tubes

Assignments and Methods of Evaluating Student Progress:
  1. Keep and turn in a 12 week food and physical activity journal
  2. Read the monthly Nutrtion Action Newletter and write a paper on one of the articles in the newsletter
  3. Create and execute a Pilates routine in front of the class.
  4. Write a self evaluation on stress and stress reduction

Upon the completion of this course, the student should be able to:
  1. Demonstrate and explain the physiological reasons for performing a proper warm up.
  2. Work within a group, or team, to solve problems
