Catalog Description:

PEAC WEI4 - Weight Training for Muscular Power

0.50 - 2.00 Units

This is a course designed to increase the muscular power of the student through high velocity training. Emphasis on improving neuromuscular coordination through the utilization of the stretch-reflex principle and higher rates of acceleration through lighter training loads.
Prerequisite: PEAC WEI3.

Measurable Objectives:
Upon completion of this course, the student should be able to:
  1. demonstrate a knowledge of strength training periodization protocol;
  2. demonstrate proper techniques used in muscular power training;
  3. develop and demonstrate a higher rate of acceleration.
Course Content:
  1. Safety in the weight room and over stress injuries.
  2. Demonstration of muscular power.
  3. Explanation and demonstration of the different tools that provide different stimulus.
  4. Explaination and demonstration of the stretch-reflex principle.
  5. Explanation and demonstration of creating a higher rate of acceleration through lighter loads and faster contraction velocity repetitions.
  6. Explanation and demonstration of low volume & full recovery (longer rest periods)- FITT Principles.
Methods of Instruction:
  1. Demonstration/Exercise
  2. Lecture/Discussion
  3. Practice/Demonstration
  4. Textbook reading assignments
  5. Distance Education
Assignments and Methods of Evaluating Student Progress:
  1. Watch video presentations of muscular power techniques. Then write a paper explaining different methods to develop power.
  2. Design a chart to analyze lifting technique. Use this chart to critique a classmate's lifting technique.
  3. Read the chapter on lifting technique and be prepared to discuss important technique points in 3 different muscular power lifts.
  1. Exams/Tests
  2. Final Examination
  3. Class Performance
  4. Demonstration of practice and skills
Upon the completion of this course, the student should be able to:
  1. Demonstrate improved fitness, and overall wellness, by participating in a consistent training program
  2. Work within a group, or team, to solve problems
Textbooks (Typical):
  1. Baechle, Thomas and Roger, Earle. (2021). Essentials of Strength Training & Conditioning LA Fitness Systems.
