PEAC WEI1 - Introduction to Weight Training

Designed to teach the basic elements of weight training and prepare the student's body; i.e., muscles, ligaments, tendons and joints to endure weight training. Emphasis on developing muscle strength balances in the 3 different planes of motion and muscular endurance training. Circuit training will be utilized.

Measurable Objectives:
Upon completion of this course, the student should be able to:
  1. demonstrate a knowledge of the FITT principles;
  2. demonstrate knowledge of the principles of strength training;
  3. demonstrate proper techniques of the basic form used in muscular endurance training;
  4. track their blood pressure on a consistent basis;
  5. develop and demonstrate a greater work capacity.
Course Content:
 
  1. Safety in the weight room, injury- prone exercise awareness.
  2. History of resistance training. 
  3. Basic exercise physiology.
  4. Methods of training the energy systems.  
  5. Explanation of the different tools that provide different training stimulus.
  6. Low intensity, high volume with short rest periods.
  7. Nutrition - How it relates to training and recovery.  
  8. Demonstration of five functional resistance exercises. 
  9. Demonstration of activities that provide a resistance training stimulus.
  10. Demonstration of anaerobic training exercises. 
  11. High glycemic foods and pre-diabetes.
  12. Tracking your blood pressure.

Assignments and Methods of Evaluating Student Progress:
  1. Do a video analysis of a classmate's lifting technique.
  2. Read the chapter on lifting technique and be prepared to discuss important technique points in at least 3 lifts.
  3. Keep a six week journal showing blood pressure readings at least three times per week.
  4. Watch video presentations on ME (muscular endurance) techniques then write a paper on today's popular methods of training.
  1. Satisfactory attendance for the duration of the course.

  4. Demonstration of specific skills.
  5. A written examination covering lectures and demonstrations.

Upon the completion of this course, the student should be able to:
  1. Demonstrate and explain the physiological reasons for performing a proper warm up.
  2. Work within a group, or team, to solve problems
  3. Demonstrate improved fitness, and overall wellness, by participating in a consistent training program
