KINE 12FT - Introduction to Football Officiating

This course is designed to teach the Fundamentals of Football Officiating, National Federation Rules, Responsibilities, On the Field Mechanics & Concepts of Officiating high school football.

Measurable Objectives:
Upon completion of this course, the student should be able to:
  1. demonstrate knowledge of the rules of the game;
  2. draw a diagram of the positioning of officials on the field;
  3. demonstrate the approved/ accepted mechanics & signals;
  4. demonstrate an understanding of game physiology.
Course Content:

(Lecture)

  1. Principals of the game
  2. Rules
  3. Phyical mechanics and positioning for calls on the field

(Lab)

  1. Application of on field mechanics and positioning
  2. Mirror work of accepted/ approved signals
  3. Physiological training for the game experience
Methods of Instruction:
  1. Lecture/Discussion
  2. Practice/Demonstration
  3. Simulations
  4. Presentation of audio-visual materials
  5. Performance
  6. Verbal explanation and demonstration.
  7. Handouts and rule interpretations.
Assignments and Methods of Evaluating Student Progress:
  1. Write out the definitions of all the Terms used when officiating football.
  2. Present a report demonstrating knowledge of Periods, Time Factors, Substitutions
  3. Discuss the general principles and duties of officials
  4. Simulation of a game with 2 Person Crew Mechanics
  5. Run a simulation of a game using a 3 Person Crew Mechanics and positioning
  6. Diagram the positions on 4 Person Official Crew
  7. Demonstrate the Official Football Hand Signals

Upon the completion of this course, the student should be able to:
  1. Work within a group, or team, to solve problems
  2. demonstrate the hand signals to officiate a football game
Textbooks (Typical):
  1. Gary G. Frieders (2022). Handbook of High School Football Rules and Mechanics Human Kinetics.
  • Students are asked to bring a black and white v-neck officiating jersey and a Foc-40 Whistle, which can be obtained at any major sporting goods store.
