PEAC DIS1 - Introduction to Disc Sports

Introductory course with instruction in various sport activities associated with a flying disc. Class will include instruction in basic throws and catches, along with instruction in the rules and participation in ultimate, double disc court and disc golf.

Measurable Objectives:
Upon completion of this course, the student should be able to:
  1. demonstrate basic throwing skills with a flying disc;
  2. demonstrate the ability to catch a disc;
  3. demonstrate a knowledge and understanding of the rules of ultimate;
  4. demonstrate a knowledge and understanding of the rules of disc golf;
  5. demonstrate a knowledge and understanding of the rules of double disc;
  6. demonstrate an improved level of cardiovascular fitness and agility by participating in the various disc activities.
Course Content:
1. How to perform the following throws: forehand, back hand, wrist flick, upside down throw, thumb.
2. How to catch a disc: one hand, two hand, trailing edge, leading edge, between the legs, behind the back. 
3. Rules of ultimate disc
4. Rules of disc golf
5. Rules of double disc
6. Instruction on the field dimensions along with different offensive and defensive strategies for ultimate disc
7. Social interaction and the code of conduct for disc activities
8. Learning to officiate and the "spirit of the game" rule used in ultimate
9. Proper warm-up and cool down for disc activities
10. Fitness activities to improve performance and enhance health and wellness

Assignments and Methods of Evaluating Student Progress:
  1. Demonstrate the ability to perform the box drill in clockwise and counterclockwise directions
  2. Read the chapter on the rules of ultimate. Write a short paper describing the basic rules of ultimate disc
  3. Demonstrate a proper warm up routine before participating in a game of ultimate
