Catalog Description:

PEAC AQA1 - Aqua Aerobics

0.50 - 2.00 Units

A conditioning workout that emphasizes cardiovascular endurance activities in the pool. After sufficient warm-up, water exercises that develop increased aerobic efficiency will be performed by students. Student need not be a swimmer to participate in this class. Students will learn about training and prevention of metabolic syndrome through diet and exercise in this course

Measurable Objectives:
Upon completion of this course, the student should be able to:
  1. develop to a level of aerobic fitness that will enable him/her to have increased oxygen transportation and improved cardiovascular endurance and energy;
  2. demonstrate greater flexibility and muscle strength due to mild water resistance;
  3. demonstrate how to track their blood pressure;
  4. demonstrate a variety of exercises, such as walking, jogging, slides, jumps, hops, skips and deep water running.
Course Content:

  1. Water exercises with large leg movements that will promote aerobic endurance and efficiency of the cardiovascular system (can easily be performed by swimmer and non-swimmer alike)
  2. Exercises to develop strength and endurance within the pool
  3. Exercises to enhance flexibility and range of motion within the pool
Methods of Instruction:
  1. Demonstration/Exercise
  2. Lecture/Discussion
  3. Textbook reading assignments
  4. Primarily by lecture-demonstration method. Individual assistance given when needed.
Assignments and Methods of Evaluating Student Progress:
  1. Contrast and compare the principles of buoyancy and resistance in a water aerobic workout. How do these principles contribute to providing a health-benefitting exercise routine?
  2. Read the chapter on basic water physics and be prepared to discuss how the principle of leverage can increase the intensity of an aquatic aerobic workout.
  3. Read the chapter on resistive equipment for the water and be prepared to demonstrate the use of at least three types of equipment.
  1. Class attendance, promptness, and participation in assigned class activities.
  2. Attendance
  3. Quizzes
  4. Assigned activities
Upon the completion of this course, the student should be able to:
  1. Demonstrate and explain the physiological reasons for performing a proper warm up.
  2. Demonstrate improved fitness, and overall wellness, by participating in a consistent training program
Textbooks (Typical):
