Measurable Objectives:
Upon completion of this course, the student should be able to:
demonstrate an understanding of aerobic training through the use of target heart rate training zones;
demonstrate how to properly warm-up and cool down after a training session;
run/walk 5 kilometers or 3.1 miles.
Course Content:
Calculation of target heart rate training zones
How to use a heart rate monitor to train
Training based on current fitness levels assessed through heart rate
Designing a training plan using heart rate
The importance of warming up and how to do it
The importance of cooling down and why
Basic nutrition for healthy living and performance
Basic strength training to improve running performance

Assignments and Methods of Evaluating Student Progress:
Calculate your predicted maximum heart rate. Use this number to calculate your target heart rate training zones for 60%, 70% and 85%. Write this down in your journal and turn a copy into the instructor.
Do a 1 mile assessment moving at 70% of maximum heart rate. Record the exact time (to the second). Write this time and heart rate down in your journal and turn in a copy to your instructor.
Demonstrate to the class three different exercises to stretch the hamstrings at the completion of a training session.
