Reading to develop fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension skills. Instruction and practice of reading strategies with students with specific learning disabilities in mind. Includes reading comprehension strategies and vocabulary development in preparation for college-level English courses.

Measurable Objectives:
Upon completion of this course, the student should be able to:
  1. visually recognize new and familiar words using a multi-sensory approach;
  2. demonstrate increased reading vocabulary;
  3. demonstrate increased reading comprehension through outlines and main idea statements;
  4. write summaries and response paragraphs to short articles;
  5. identify the various types of text presented in college classes and align appropriate reading strategy.
Course Content:
1. Identify and paraphrase important details from college level text
2. Intensive vocabulary development
3. Contextualize and define high use academic vocabulary words
4. Identify thesis, topic sentences, and major details for comprehension
5. Summarize and develop response to text and literature

  1. Read a 2-4 page article. Write a summary outline and a summery of the article.
