ART 7D - Advanced Watercolor Painting II

3.00 Units

Continued development of skills and techniques introduced in Advanced Watercolor I, directed towards individual needs. Student artist is directed to develop personalized imagery and begin to settle on individual techniques.
Prerequisite: ART 7C.

Measurable Objectives:
Upon completion of this course, the student should be able to:
  1. demonstrate a critical view of their advanced watercolor paintings as well as other people’s watercolor paintings;
  2. paint advanced watercolor paintings based on skills developed in 7A, 7B, and 7C;
  3. show continued growth in their craft-based technical skills and individual imagery and symbols;
  4. present their work in a professional manner.
  5. create a series of work based upon their own concepts and ideas;
  6. utilize museums and galleries as a learning source.
Course Content:

Course Content (Lecture):

  1. Advanced application of tools and techniques of watercolor painting
  2. Advanced perspectival strategies
  3. In-depth exploration of the value of one’s own conceptual and emotional assumptions and those of painters other than oneself
  4. Advanced techniques of still life, landscape, figural and non-representational painting
  5. Discuss the organization of a professional presentation for showcasing the final watercolor paintings
  6. Define ways to critique own work for self-improvement
  7. Discussions of the work quality during the museum and gallery visits                                                                 

Course Content (Studio):

  1. Student will apply advanced application of tools and techniques of oil painting
  2. Student will use advanced perspectival strategies while creating their paintings
  3. Student will apply in-depth exploration of the value of one’s own conceptual and emotional assumptions and those of painters other than oneself while creating their paintings
  4. Student will use advanced techniques of still life, landscape, figural and non-representational painting during the process of creating their paintings
  5. Students will create paintings that develop student’s individual styles and techniques
    1. Paintings based on a single theme
    2. Paintings based on an event
    3. Paintings based on a concepts such as religious imagery or political observations
  6. Presentation of work in a professional framework for exhibitions
  7. Development of a series for a professional portfolio of work

Assignments and Methods of Evaluating Student Progress:
  1. Create a painting based on emotional content such as a picture based on color, expression and composition that conveys sadness.
  2. Paint a painting that evokes a childhood memory.
  3. Paint a painting based on an event, a trip or a place.
  1. Completion of assigned watercolor paintings based on series of ideas developed by the student
  2. Completion of a final watercolor based on student's own concepts
  3. Series of critiques during and at end of each semester
  4. Demonstrations of advanced skills and techniques by the student
Upon the completion of this course, the student should be able to:
  1. Students will develop personal viewpoints so their works reflect their own emotional philosophy.
  2. The student will be able to paint advanced watercolor paintings based on skills developed in 7A, 7B and 7C
  3. The student will present their work in a professional manner

  1. Webb, David (2016). Painting in Watercolor: The Indispensable Guide Firefly Books; Illustrated edition .
  • Material list to be provided at the start of the course, to include: various brushed, watercolor paints, palette, transportation container, papers, and other items such as easel, sponges, etc.
