The guided ESL skills lab supplements classroom instruction for any ESL student. In a supportive, guided lab setting, students use educational software, online and audio-visual materials, one-on-one coaching, and other valuable resources to expand and enrich the learning experience beyond the classroom.

Measurable Objectives:
Upon completion of this course, the student should be able to:
  1. depending on individual learning goals, identify, practice, and demonstrate improvement in their reading, writing, grammar, and listening/speaking skills;
  2. follow oral and written directions at an appropriate level;
  3. use a computer and language learning software to practice and enhance their language skills for academic coursework.

Assignments and Methods of Evaluating Student Progress:
  1. Select an online newspaper article on a local issue. After reading, write a summary of the article. Then underline the subjects and verbs; check for correctness. Then, meet with a tutor or instructor to discuss your writing.
  2. Select a reading card and answer sheet from the Multicultural Reading Workshop box. Answer the prereading questions first, and then read the passage and answer the comprehension questions. Write all answers on the answer sheet. Check with the Answer Key, a tutor, or an instructor. Write your score on the answer sheet.
  3. Complete Unit 2 of Writing in English software (High-beginning). Take the review test at the end then view your test score and record it on your learning log. Write any questions you have on your learning log and share them with your instructor at your next appointment.
  4. Go to one of the conversations groups scheduled in the Language Center and participate in the discussion. Afterwards, record in your learning log how the discussion went. What did you learn? How much did you participate? What topics were discussed? Are there any questions you have?

Upon the completion of this course, the student should be able to:
  1. The student is able to set their learning goal by identifying strengths and weaknesses in his/her own language skills.
  2. The student is able to select appropriate resources and articulate questions and needs to receive support from the instructor and Learning Assistant to reach the learning goal.
  3. The student is able to write clear sentences in a Learning Log to state a goal, describe the method and materials used to reach the goal, and share his/her own assessment of the progress made.
