This is a noncredit course in ESL Listening and Speaking at the Intermediate Level. Students will gain listening comprehension skills, oral fluency, study skills, and familiarity with Chabot College certificates, degrees and services. This course is free and may be repeated until mastery in the skill is met. Recommendation to take the course concurrently with ESL 110B. This course is part of a Certificate of Completion. Available Certificates can be found in the Chabot College Catalog.
Prerequisite: ESL 110A or ESL 240A or ESL 242A or appropriate skill level demonstrated through ESL assessment process.

Measurable Objectives:
Upon completion of this course, the student should be able to:
  1. engage in classroom lectures, presentations and discussions at the intermediate level by adding meaningful and appropriate ideas, asking and answering topical questions, and/or asking follow up questions;
  2. prepare -wh questions in past, present, and future time and with modal verbs;
  3. communicate with representatives of college services and degree and certificate programs;
  4. verbally express ideas clearly and appropriately for the intermediate level;
  5. plan and deliver 5-10 minute oral presentations with appropriate organization, delivery, and development of topic;
  6. comprehend oral lectures at the intermediate level, and take notes on the main idea and supporting details;
  7. participate in typical meetings necessary for degree or certificate-seeking college students, including speaking with a counselor about degree requirements, getting help from a financial aid advisor, asking questions at a college transfer info session, etc;
  8. identify and demonstrate American English pronunciation of frequently confused consonants, consonant clusters, and vowels (cream/crime, chip/ship, sip/zip).

    7. Listening Activities and Role Plays focused on classroom skills and college success:
      1. Eliciting and giving opinions with support on academic topics;
      2. Making suggestions and coming to a consensus in group activities;
      3. Asking follow up questions to keep a conversation going;
      4. Making a course plan with a counselor;
      5. Learning about the FAFSA and scholarships from a financial aid advisor;
      6. Getting details about degrees and certificates from department representatives;
      7. Asking questions at a job fair.

Assignments and Methods of Evaluating Student Progress:
  1. Watch a video from the financial aid office about the FAFSA application process and take notes on the important information. Compare your notes with your classmates. What important information did you choose to write in your notes? Did you make the same choices as your classmates? Write follow up questions to ask the financial aid representative when they come to class next week.
  2. In small groups, read cases of individual students: their interests, goals, and timelines. Then decide together with your group what major or certificate is the best choice and why. Make sure your group comes to a consensus and then choose one student to present your decision with reasons to the class.
  3. Research and present about a degree or certificate offered by Chabot College. Provide your classmates with important details about the prerequisite, the program requirements, average time to complete, related jobs, and who to contact if you are interested. Talk for 8-10 minutes with visual aids.
