This is a noncredit course in ESL Listening and Speaking at the Low Intermediate Level. Students will gain listening comprehension skills, oral fluency, study skills, and be introduced to Chabot College services and activities. This course is free and may be repeated until mastery in the skill is met. Recommendation to take the course concurrently with ESL 110A. This course is part of a Certificate of Completion. Available Certificates can be found in the Chabot College Catalog.

Measurable Objectives:
Upon completion of this course, the student should be able to:
  1. Engage in classroom lectures, presentations and discussions at the low-intermediate level by making relevant comments, asking and answering questions, and/or asking for clarification;
  2. Prepare yes/no and wh- questions in past and present time;
  3. Access important college activities and services;
  4. Verbally express ideas clearly and appropriately for a low-intermediate level;
  5. Plan and deliver 3-5 minute oral presentations with appropriate organization, delivery, and development of topic;
  6. Comprehend and take notes on oral lectures at the low-intermediate level;
  7. Participate in typical meetings necessary for ESL students on a college campus, including speaking with an instructor during office hours, meeting with a counselor, and working with a tutor;
  8. Demonstrate clear pronunciation of frequently confused words at the low-intermediate level (this/these, woman/women).
Course Content:
  1. Listening / Speaking (70%)
    1. Pre- listening techniques
      1. activating background knowledge

    2. Coverage of low-Intermediate level vocabulary
      1. meaning and pronunciation, important for class listening tasks and participation in college services and activities;
    3. Listening for main ideas and some important details, 
      1. reasons 
      2. time order
    4. Synthesizing and paraphrasing information from low-intermediate listenings into:
      1. charts
      2. notes 
      3. written and oral responses to questions
    5. Basic note-taking methods and conventions;
    6. Pronunciation skill development in frequently confused words as needed for clarity
      1.  in consonant sounds
      2. vowel sounds
      3. syllables
      4. stress 
    7. Listening Activities and Role Plays related to classroom skills and college participation:
      1. Asking for and giving opinions and reasons
      2. Agreeing and Disagreeing politely in group activities
      3. Asking for clarification from a classmate, instructor or tutor
      4. Having conversations with college services such as a counselor, tutor, DSPS, etc
      5. Joining a college club or activity
      6. Gaining information about the credit and noncredit ESL classes in our program, 
        1. the difference between credit and noncredit
        2.  certificates available from the ESL department
    8. Question grammar in Yes/No and WH questions 
      1.  present and past time
    9. Preparing questions for and participating in information sessions with college services and activities

    2. Building Knowledge of college services such as counseling, learning communities, and DSPS;
    3. Navigating student learning supports such as Learning Center ESL tutoring and the ESL computer lab;
    4. Building awareness of college activities such as clubs and sports.
  3. Computer Literacy (10%)
    1. Navigating Canvas LMS
      1.  to check homework and grades
      2. watch videos
      3. send/receive messages from an instructor
    2. Using Canvas-based tool to respond orally to forum posts on a given topic;
    3. Navigating the college website and email to find information.

Assignments and Methods of Evaluating Student Progress:
  1. Listen to a guest speaker from counseling and take notes. Compare your notes with your classmates and rewatch recordings of the presentation. What important information did you choose to write in your notes? What can you learn from the notes your classmates took? What symbols and abbreviations did you use to write more quickly? Take a practice quiz on the presentation information using your notes.
  2. Write and perform a roll play conversation between a student and the Learning Connections. The student wants to set up a tutoring appointment. Imagine the questions the Learning Connections and the student might ask and provide answers.
  3. Research and present about a student club or activity at Chabot College. Provide your classmates with important details about the club, who can join, what they do, when and where they meet, and how to get involved. Talk for 3-5 minutes and provide a visual aid.
