ART 12D - Advanced Oil Painting II
3.00 Units
Advanced projects in oil painting with emphasis on individual creative work and development of personal ideas and style. Students will build on skills previously developed in the intermediate painting classes. Students will have the ability to show independent course work through exhibition opportunities. Mentoring students from the beginning levels classes is an important aspect of this course.
Prerequisite: ART 12C.

Measurable Objectives:
Upon completion of this course, the student should be able to:
demonstrate advanced usage of tools and techniques of painting in oils;
name and skillfully replicate several specific perspectival strategies to alter a two-dimensional picture plane into an illusionistic three-dimensional space;
express a deeper, more thorough appreciation of the value of the conceptual and emotional assumptions of oneself and painters other than oneself;
skillfully paint subjects of several genres, including still life, landscape, figural, and non-representational art;
organize a professional presentation for showcasing the final paintings;
develop ways to critique own work for self-improvement;
visit museums and galleries as a learning source.

Course Content (Lecture):
Advanced application of tools and techniques of oil painting
Advanced perspectival strategies
In-depth exploration of the value of one’s own conceptual and emotional assumptions and those of painters other than oneself
Advanced techniques of still life, landscape, figural and non-representational painting
Discuss the organization of a professional presentation for showcasing the final paintings
Define ways to critique own work for self-improvement
Discussions of the work quality during the museum and gallery visits
Course Content (Studio):
Student will apply advanced application of tools and techniques of oil painting
Student will use advanced perspectival strategies while creating their paintings
Student will apply in-depth exploration of the value of one’s own conceptual and emotional assumptions and those of painters other than oneself while creating their paintings
Student will use advanced techniques of still life, landscape, figural and non-representational painting during the process of creating their paintings

Assignments and Methods of Evaluating Student Progress:
Paint a series of paintings (2 to 4) that visualizes a personal, emotional outlook. These pictures should have common themes and similar images, yet be different paintings; therefore, teaching the student to develop multiple answers to a single theme or idea
Connect and relate historical imagery with the your own personal themes and concept.
Using a San Francisco gallery map: by next class, visit 10 galleries showing paintings.
