Introduction to principles, elements, and practices of acrylic painting. Focus on exploration of painting materials, perceptual skills and color theory, paint mixing and technique, as well as creative responses to materials and subject matter.

Measurable Objectives:
Upon completion of this course, the student should be able to:
  1. create paintings that evince a working knowledge of the physical properties of acrylic paint;
  2. organize and apply the basic formal elements and principles of design in paintings;
  3. apply the principles of perceptually and theoretically based color theory to painting projects;
  4. construct and prepare painting surfaces and supports;
  5. develop expressive content through manipulation of mark, color, value, and composition;
  6. examine and describe historical and contemporary developments, trends, materials, and approaches in painting;
  7. assess and critique paintings in group, individual, and written contexts using relevant critique formats, concepts and terminology;
  8. safely handle and use studio painting materials and equipment.

    3. Alternative supports
  2. Physical characteristics of acrylic paints and the tools and techniques used to apply them:
    1. tools
    2. mediums 
    3. layering techniques
  3. Apply the principles of perceptually and theoretically based color theory to painting projects:
    1. Examples of value-based painting and color-based painting
    2. Traditional use of color harmonies  
  4. Effects of format size and/or scale relations within a painting
  5. Effects of texture on color and space
  6. Historic and Contemporary trends in painting:
    1. Still life
    2. landscape
    3. figure
    4. non-representational
  7. Examine and describe historical and contemporary developments:
    1. painting termonology
    2. trends
    3. materials
    4. approaches in painting
  8. Organization and application of the basic formal elements and principles of design as they relate to painting.

  2. Students will apply physical characteristics of acrylic paints:

  3. Students will explore underpainting techniques:
    1. grisaille
    2. local color
    3. colored ground
    4. alternative grounds
  4. Students will use organization and application of the basic formal elements and principles of design as they relate to painting

  5. Students will explore subject matter using acylic paint:

Assignments and Methods of Evaluating Student Progress:
  1. Paint a self-portrait using color as expressive content. Students will research the use of portraiture in historic and contemporary paintings.
  2. Paint a color still-life using a multi-layer painting technique. Student will focus on using color theory and grisaille underpainting techniques.
