ART 18B - Wood and Stone Sculpture II

3.00 Units

An intermediate course in the Design and carving of more advanced 3-dimensional sculptures, using subtractive methods in wood and stone. Includes care and maintenance of pneumatic (air power) technology. Elements and principles of three-dimensional design are emphasized in oral and written critiques.
Prerequisite: ART 18A.

Measurable Objectives:
Upon completion of this course, the student should be able to:
  1. build advanced level three-dimensional maquettes of clay, plaster ,soap or foam for a 3-dimensional sculpture that has unity and variety of shape,texture and value; can be kinetic;
  2. use wood and stone to create artwork that shows a new personal style using subject matter that was not explored in 18A;
  3. analyze masterpieces and students’ sculptures, and use the vocabulary for elements and principles of three-dimensional design in oral critiques.

    1. hand tools

    3. sharpening and maintenance
    4. saftey demonstration
  2.  Advanced wood and stone terms and technology lecture through slides and video.  
  3. Further study of masterpieces:
    1. Eastern ceramic art
    2. Western ceramic art
    3. contemporary sculpture
    4. student creations 
  4. Further use of elements and principles of three-dimensional design and personal style

  1. Bas-relief woodcarving or wood construction or a combination using multiple advanced methods. 
  2. Bas-relief stone carving using multiple advanced methods:
    1.  advanced medium of marble
    2.  advanced polishing techinques

  2. Exercise in intermediate level freestanding sculptures in wood or stone.
  3. Compulsory tool maintenance practice; i.e., sharpening skills.
  4. Midterm and final oral critique of finished art work.

Upon the completion of this course, the student should be able to:
  1. Produce 3 dimensional sculptures using traditional media, wood, and stone to develop advanced craftsmanship and exercise creativity and personal expression.
  2. Further development producing 3 dimensional sculptures in bas-relief surface decoration.
  3. Critique masterpieces and student sculptures incorporating elements and principles of 3-dimensional design terminology.
