DHYG 80A - Patient Management

1.00 Units

The focus of this course are patient care competencies in providing dental hygiene care for the child, adolescent, adult and geriatric patient. Students will assess the treatment needs of patients and modify procedures as needed in order to provide effective dental hygiene treatment.
Prerequisite: DHYG 71B, Corequisite: DHYG 56A and DHYG 81A.

Measurable Objectives:
Upon completion of this course, the student should be able to:
  1. describe and recognize characteristics of the child dental patient, the adolescent patient, the adult patient and the geriatric patient;
  2. list characteristics in specific life stages;
  3. identify expected outcomes of care for each patient category;
  4. collect evidence to formulate a comprehensive treatment plan to meet patient needs;
  5. interprets and summarizes patient assessment findings to provide comprehensive patient education to the patient and/or parent/guardian;
  6. debride calculus and plaque using appropriate and safe instrumentation techniques;
  7. write an evaluative statement with continued care options;
  8. collect evidence to determine whether goals are being are met;
  9. accurate documentation in the electronic dental record the completion of services rendered. Include evaluative statement, dental referral and recall interval established.
