This course is designed to provide the student with the basic principles of strength training for overall health and wellness. Once the student has completed an orientation, the student will be able to attend a large number of weight training classes that fit his/her schedule.

Measurable Objectives:
Upon completion of this course, the student should be able to:
  1. demonstrate a dead lift correctly:
  2. demonstrate a squat correctly;
  3. demonstrate a pull up;
  4. demonstrate a push press;
  5. demonstrate a lunge.
Course Content:
  1. Rules and safety in the weight room
  2. Designing a proper training program
  3. Proper warm up and why its important
  4. How to dead lift
  5. How to squat lift
  6. How to perform lunges
  7. How to move laterally 
  8. How to push press 
  9. How to do pull ups
  10. How to twist to strengthen your core
  11. Determining a starting point for training
  12. Monitoring your improvement 
  13. Nutritional considerations for improving fitness
  14. Prediabetes and Adult Type II diabetes
  15. Body composition and overall wellness
  16. Cooling down after the workout session

  1. Demonstration/Exercise
  2. Handouts and rule interpretations.
  3. One-on-one coaching
  4. Small Group Coaching
  5. Written assignments
Assignments and Methods of Evaluating Student Progress:
  1. Write a one page paper on the how a proper warm up routine prepares the body for movement.
  2. Demonstrate proper form while performing a front squat.
  3. Lead a small group through a cool down after the training session.
  4. Keep a daily journal and analyze changes in daily behavior as it relates to health and wellness.

Upon the completion of this course, the student should be able to:
  1. Demonstrate and explain the physiological reasons for performing a proper warm up.
