DHYG 55A - Dental Materials

1.50 Units

General, specialty, preventive and restorative materials will be covered, with focus on components, properties, classification and manipulation of specific materials. Lab activities designed to prepare student for use of materials within the dental setting.
Prerequisite: DHYG 69A.

Measurable Objectives:
Upon completion of this course, the student should be able to:
  1. distinguish the properties and uses of the following dental materials:
    a. impression materials;
    b. gypsum products;
    c. cements, bases and liners;
    d. restorative material;
    • composite resins;
    glass ionomer
    • ceramics;
    • amalgam;
    e. bleaching agents;
    f. periodontal dressings;
    g. dental sutures;
    h. dentin/enamel bonding agents;
  2. identify the indications and contraindications of dental hygiene therapy related to dental materials utilized in the oral cavity;
  3. demonstrate the following procedures to a level of laboratory competency:
    a. taking alginate impressions;
    b. pouring and trimming of plaster models;
    c. fabrication of bleaching trays;
    d. fabrication of mouth guards;
  4. demonstrate the following procedures related to dental hygiene care to a level of laboratory competency: a. removal of supragingival/subgingival excess cement; b. placement of periodontal dressing;
  5. demonstrate the following procedures related to Interim Therapeutic Restorations (ITRs) to a level of laboratory competency: manipulation and placement of temporary Glass Ionomer restorative material;
  6. demonstrate the following procedures to a level of laboratory competency: a. placement of Tofflemire matrix and retainer; b. placement of IRM temporary restoration; c. placement of rubber dam; d. care/maintenance of removable appliance;
  7. demonstrate the following procedures to a level of laboratory competency: a. placing dental sealants; b. removing sutures.

    2. discuss background and rationale for placement of an Interim Therapeutic Restoration (ITR)
    3. Identify and discuss criteria for ITR placement:
      1. patient factors
      2. tooth factors
      3. acceptability of lesion for treamtne
      4. risks and benefits of ITR placement

Course Content (Laboratory):
  1. demonstrate the following procedures to a level of laboratory competency
      1. taking alginate impression

    1. demonstrate the following procedures related to dental hygiene care to a level of laboratory competency

      2. evaluation of completed ITR restoration

      6. suture removal

Upon the completion of this course, the student should be able to:
  1. Distinguish and discuss the properties related to dental materials
  2. Demonstrate taking an alginate impression, and pouring and trimming the associated model
  3. Fabricate a bleaching tray and/or mouthguard
  4. Discuss theory and decision making process for placement of an ITR restoration
  5. Demonstrate placement and evaluation of an ITR restoration
  6. Demonstrate placement of : Tofflemire matrix, IRM temporary restoration, rubber dam, dental sealant, and periodontal dressing to competency
  7. Demonstrate care/maintenance of removable appliances, removal of sutures, removal of supra/subgingival cement
