PEAC FFR2 - Fitness for the First Responder Intermediate

Designed to support students in the emergency response disciplines. An intermediate approach to the physical aspects of first response including aerobic, anaerobic, strength and core training. Back care, injury prevention and shift work nutrition strategies will also be addressed.
Prerequisite: PEAC FFR1.

Measurable Objectives:
Upon completion of this course, the student should be able to:
  1. demonstrate safe and effective use of training equipment and principles at an intermediate level
  2. demonstrate an intermediate working knowledge of training and wellness principles as they relate to first response
  3. demonstrate intermediate knowledge and continued improvement of the aerobic and anaerobic systems through the use of circuit, confidence course and other appropriate training
  4. demonstrate an intermediate understanding of injury prevention, back care and shift work nutritional challenges
Course Content:
  1. Continued development of the components of fitness specific to the first responder.
  2. Intermediate core development and injury prevention strategies.
  3. Strategies for shift work nutrition.
  4. Continued safe practices when handling tools and equipment specific to first response.

Assignments and Methods of Evaluating Student Progress:
  1. Student will complete a Food Diary containing detailed nutritional data. Student will also reflect on the diet as it relates to the student's goals.
  2. Student will complete an intermediate level task safely for time using appropriate equipment. The task will include more detail and complexity than an introductory task, such as making a hydrant connection and charging the hydrant (intermediate) with two (2) coupled lengths of 2.5 inch hose (introductory skill).
  3. Student will complete a series of intermediate level tasks for time and safety. An intermeidate series may include pulling a charged hose line to a specific target, then completing a ventilation simulation, then completing a tool hoist and lower.

Upon the completion of this course, the student should be able to:
  1. Complete an obstacle course consisting of 6’ walls, balance beam, high climb and other elements relevant to first response, safely and with proper technique.
  2. Perform the P.O.S.T. Work Sample Test Battery elements safely and with proper technique.
