PEAC FFR1 - Fitness for the First Responder Introduction

Designed to support those students in the emergency response disciplines. An introduction to physical aspects of first response including aerobic and anaerobic training, core, strength, and strength endurance work. Injury prevention, shift work considerations and basic nutrition will also be addressed.

Measurable Objectives:
Upon completion of this course, the student should be able to:
  1. demonstrate basic safe and effective use of training equipment and principles;
  2. demonstrate a basic working knowledge of training and wellness principles as they relate to first response;
  3. demonstrate basic knowledge and improvement of the aerobic and anaerobic systems through use of circuit, confidence course and other appropriate training;
  4. demonstrate a basic understanding of overuse injury and injury prevention specific to first response.
Course Content:
  1. Development of basic muscular strength, cardio endurance, agility, balance, flexibility, anaerobic capacity specific to the demands of the first responder.
  2. Core conditioning basics, specific to first response.
  3. Basic nutition and stress management strategies helpful to first responders.
  4. Safe use of equipment and tools specific to first response.

Assignments and Methods of Evaluating Student Progress:
  1. Student will complete a series of basic tasks for time and accuracy. A basic series may include jumping a 6 foot wall, walking a 4" wide balance beam and crawling under a 3' high barrier.
  2. Student will complete a Food Diary including nutritional analysis.
  3. Student will complete a basic task using equipment for safety and time. A basic task may include coupling two (2) lengths of uncharged 2.5" fire hose together and placing the hose at a specific location.

Upon the completion of this course, the student should be able to:
  1. Student should be able to run 1.5 miles without walking.

Abbreviated Class Schedule Description:
The course is intended for first response students: fire, law enforcement and ems. An introduction to physical training with emphasis on aerobic fitness, strength, strength endurance and core development. Injury prevention, shift work considerations and basic nutrition will also be addressed.
