Strongly Recommended: Student must be water safe and have ability to complete 200 yards of swimming without interruption.

Measurable Objectives:
Upon completion of this course, the student should be able to:
  1. Demonstrate ability to understand and complete instructor prescribed workout;
  2. Demonstrate ability to locate and track heart rate, (carotid, brachial, and radial), as well as the individuals parameters for cardiovascular conditioning;
  3. Demonstrate use of pace clock and training aides, specifically the use of hand paddles, pull buoy and kickboard.
Course Content:
  1. Review competitive swimming strokes and their relation to cardiovascular conditioning.
  2. Explanation and demonstration of set design as it pertains to cardiovascular conditioning.
  3. Use of pace clock and its effect on set design and conditioning.

  4. Simulations
Assignments and Methods of Evaluating Student Progress:
  1. Successful completion of 1000 yard swim
  2. Read the chapter on cardiovascular conditioning and its implementation then write a short paper on aerobic swimming.
  3. Read the chapter on cardiovascular conditioning then calculate 60%, 70% and 80% target heart rate training zones.

Upon the completion of this course, the student should be able to:
  1. Demonstrate fitness through swimming.
  2. Demonstrate successful freestyle swimming.
