Measurable Objectives:
Upon completion of this course, the student should be able to:
  1. demonstrate the ability to run non-stop for a minimum of 30 minutes;
  2. demonstrate a proper dynamic warm-up routine;
  3. demonstrate a proper cool down and static flexibility routine.
Course Content:
  1. Introduction of dynamic warm-up and physiological changes that occur during the warm-up
  2. Training the aerobic energy system
  3. Training the anaerobic energy system
  4. The physiological reasons behind cooling down
  5. Static stretching activities to improve flexibility and recovery
Methods of Instruction:
  1. Demonstration/Exercise
  2. Lecture/Discussion
  3. Group Activities
  4. Textbook reading assignments
  5. Presentation of audio-visual materials
  6. Demonstration
Assignments and Methods of Evaluating Student Progress:
  1. Calculate maximum heart rate. Calculate 90%, 80% and 70% of maximum heart rate. Run at each of the following heart rates for 1.5 minutes.
  2. Read the chapter on dynamic warm-ups and write a paper explaining the reason behind warming up.
  3. Demonstrate to the class six static stretching exercises.

  1. Work within a group, or team, to solve problems
  2. Demonstrate and explain the physiological reasons for performing a proper warm up.
