SLO Rev: 12/21/2016
Catalog Description:
PEAC WEI4 - Weight Training for Muscular Power
0.50 - 2.00 Units
This is a course designed to increase the muscular power of the student through high velocity training. Emphasis on improving neuromuscular coordination through the utilization of the stretch-reflex principle and higher rates of acceleration through lighter training loads.
Prerequisite: PEAC WEI3.
CB03: TOP Code 0835.10 - Physical Fitness and Body Movement
Course Grading: Letter Grade Only
| Type | Units | Inside of Class Hours | Outside of Class Hours | Total Student Learning Hours |

Measurable Objectives:
Upon completion of this course, the student should be able to:
- demonstrate a knowledge of strength training periodization protocol;
- demonstrate proper techniques used in muscular power training;
- develop and demonstrate a higher rate of acceleration.
Course Content:
- Safety in the weight room and over stress injuries.
- Demonstration of muscular power.
- Explanation and demonstration of the different tools that provide different stimulus.
- Explaination and demonstration of the stretch-reflex principle.
- Explanation and demonstration of creating a higher rate of acceleration through lighter loads and faster contraction velocity repetitions.
- Explanation and demonstration of low volume & full recovery (longer rest periods)- FITT Principles.
Methods of Instruction:
- Demonstration/Exercise
- Lecture/Discussion
- Practice/Demonstration
- Textbook reading assignments
- Distance Education
Assignments and Methods of Evaluating Student Progress:
1. Typical Assignments
- Watch video presentations of muscular power techniques. Then write a paper explaining different methods to develop power.
- Design a chart to analyze lifting technique. Use this chart to critique a classmate's lifting technique.
- Read the chapter on lifting technique and be prepared to discuss important technique points in 3 different muscular power lifts.
2. Methods of Evaluating Student Progress
- Exams/Tests
- Final Examination
- Class Performance
- Demonstration of practice and skills
3. Student Learning Outcomes
Upon the completion of this course, the student should be able to:
- Demonstrate improved fitness, and overall wellness, by participating in a consistent training program
- Work within a group, or team, to solve problems
Textbooks (Typical):
- Baechle, Thomas and Roger, Earle. (2011). Essentials of Strength Training & Conditioning LA Fitness Systems.
