PEAC YOG1 - Introduction to Yoga

This is course explores the basic principles of Hatha Yoga and how they apply to achieving lifetime fitness. It incorporates yoga postures (asanas) designed to strengthen and tone the body. Breathing exercises, relaxation and meditation techniques are learned and practiced throughout the course. Students will learn about training and prevention of metabolic syndrome through diet and exercise in this course

Measurable Objectives:
Upon completion of this course, the student should be able to:
  1. demonstrate an improvement in strength and flexibility;
  2. execute basic asanas;
  3. execute basic balance postures;
  4. demonstrate breathing exercises and meditation techniques;
  5. track their blood pressure on a consistent basis;
  6. demonstrate the sun salutation.
Course Content:

  1. Role of resistance exercise in overall health and wellness. 
  2. Shopping and eating in a new way to improve your health 
  3. The risks of being sedentary 
  4. Safety considerations and weight room etiquette. 
  5. Principles of resistance exercise. 
  6. Basic yoga asanas.
  7. Sequence word (vinyasas) which require both slow and fast execution.
  8. basic breathing techniques.
  9. Techniques of restorative yoga and relaxation.
  10. Meditation practice.

Assignments and Methods of Evaluating Student Progress:
  1. Keep a 12 week exercise journal. In the journal record daily activity, time spent on the activity, how your felt and your exercise heart rate. Once every two weeks record your hips to waist measure.
  2. Read the chapter on postures (asanas) required for sun salutation, and then demonstrate the first four sequences in class.
  3. Design and write out a personal Hatha Yoga asana program.
  4. Demonstrate your personal Hatha Yoga program in class.

Textbooks (Typical):
  1. Moyer, Donald and Susan Leigh Foster (2011). Yoga: Awakening the Inner Body Rodmell Press.
  • Students are asked to bring a towel to class. They are expected to remove socks and shoes and attend all class sessions in the appropriate attire.
