KINE 12BB - Introduction to Baseball Officiating

This course will introduce the student to the basic rules and mechanics of officiating baseball. Students will learn the rules and basics of becoming a baseball umpire.

Measurable Objectives:
Upon completion of this course, the student should be able to:
  1. demonstrate knowledge of the rules of the game of baseball;
  2. demonstrate proper positioning to call balls and strikes from behind the plate;
  3. demonstrate their ability to manage the conduct of the players on the field, and in the dugout, while umpiring a game;
  4. demonstrate knowledge of proper position for making calls while in the field;
  5. demonstrate knowledge of their role in emergency situations while umpiring a baseball game.
Course Content:
(Lecture) 
 
  1. Protective equipment for umpiring baseball.
  2. Pre-game review of bats, balls and equipment for use by the players.
  3. Surveying the playing field for safety hazards.
  4. Behind the plate positioning for officiating.
  5. Field positioning in relation to runners on base.
  6. Handling on field conflicts.
  7. Handling unruly fans.
  8. Working with the coach and official scorekeeper. 
  9. How to scorekeep a game.

1. Putting on protective equipment for umpiring baseball.
2. Hands on  pre-game review of bats, balls and equipment for use by the players.
3. Walking the field safety hazards.
4. Behind the plate positioning for officiating.
5. On field positioning in relation to runners on base.
6. Simulation on handling on field conflicts.
7. Handling unruly fans.
8. Scorekeep a game.

Assignments and Methods of Evaluating Student Progress:
  1. Review approved bat list prior to play. Now demonstrate that you can identify an illegal bat in class.
  2. Demonstrate proper positioning and hand signals for umpiring behind the plate.
  3. Read the chapter on safety concerns. Write a paper on the major safety concerns when working behind the plate in baseball.
